Early symptoms can often be painful and sometimes visible to the untrained eye. Call your dentist if you fee or seel:
Why do I need regular dental check-ups?
A regular visit to your dentist can help you catch any dental problems in their early stages and not when they require painful, expensive procedures like surgery. Biannual visits to your dentist also let your doctor clean the plaque from your teeth, which keeps your gums healthy and avoids any extra spaces between your teeth.
Ideally, you want to see your dentist once every six months. If you want to visit our office, you can book an appointment and have a consultation with one of our dental professionals right here in Cabo
You can manage sensitivity with a special, sensitive tooth formula to help ease the pain. If one spot is particularly sensitive, rub a little toothpaste on it before going to bed to help it calm down.
The sensitivity can also come from highly acidic foods, grinding your teeth at night, or nerve issues. Talk to your doctor about any dietary changes you may need to make, your options for a mouthguard, or other procedures to help get rid of the pain.
You may not be able to manage the pain with normal medications. Take it easy and try to get the pain down on your own for the first 24 hours. If the pain continues, you need to alert your doctor and possibly return to the dentist’s office for a follow-up.
If your pain starts three to four days after the extraction, you could have an abscess that needs to be dressed by the doctor. Call your practitioner right away if this happens as leaving it unattended could lead to serious infection.
Any tooth that gets knocked out of your mouth needs to be replaced as quickly as possible, ideally within 30 minutes of the accident. If this isn’t possible, clean it and keep it in a glass of milk until you can see the dentist. Contact your practitioner for an emergency appointment at the first opportunity.
If you have swelling in your cheeks, you have an infection. You need to see a dentist right away.
Your dentist's office needs your personal details such as your date of birth and any history of dental issues. Then a professional will examine and chart your teeth and gums for your record and may take an X-ray.
Once your doctor has a full picture of your history and current health needs, he or she will create a treatment plan and discuss pricing with you. You can make any future appointments as necessary.
Most toothbrushes are appropriate for use, as long as they have soft bristles. Hard or medium bristles could damage your teeth and gums. You want to brush your teeth after every meal for about two minutes.
Most kinds of toothpaste do a great job of clearing away bacteria, but people who feel pain with hot or cold food need sensitive toothpaste. If you prefer a natural tooth powder or gel, you can find these in health food stores or your local co-op.
Flossing does the important job of removing tiny pieces of food from between our teeth. If you choose not to floss, those particles harden into tartar that pushes your teeth apart. Over time, it makes your gums pull back from your teeth and leaves them looser in your mouth. Use waxed or unwaxed floss to get your teeth as clean as possible.
Mouthwashes and rinses work best in tandem with a good dental hygiene routine. Use it after brushing to improve your breath, help calm down sensitivity, and protect against cavities. If you have dry mouth or concerns for your gum health, talk to your dentist about the best rinse for you.
